28th September 2009
The Hurst Selection is buoyant this week as we return with a far more ‘current’ feel to the twenty-four track selection. No fewer than eighteen of these are from 2009 and N’Dambi and the new Maze tribute album provide six of these.
N’dambi’s ‘Pink Elephant’ drops in the US on the 6th October on Stax Records and is shaping up to be the album of the year. We’ll feature 4 from the lovely lady next week, but in the meantime we’re happy to offer a flavour of it ahead of its release with two tracks: the naughty but ridiculously good ‘Can’t Hardly Wait’ and the opener on today’s ‘Selection, ‘The World Is A Beat’. Marvellous stuff.
The Maze tribute album ‘Silky Soul Music…An All Star Tribute To Maze’ is about ready to go as a full CD release in the US this week and we’re happy to report that it’s also fabulous. Four tracks are on offer here, as we feature Joe, Ledisi, Mint Condition and Kem, giving props and paying homage to the legends that are Frankie Beverly and Maze.
Other tracks on offer in the first hour come from Uptown Funk Empire, Ellis Phelps (x 2), the UK’s Nathan Watson and the title cut from Ledisi’s latest album ‘Turn Me Loose’.
There’s also 4 from: Mint Condition. One of the most underrated bands from the last two decades and to this day, still making exceptional music. Four fine examples are presented here from 1991 through to 2009, and proof if it were ever needed, of their enduring quality.
The Jazzier Side of Life eases into its stride with excellent tracks from the new albums from Najee and Peter White – ably supported by Eric Benet and Basia respectively. There’s Nicholas Kopernicus out of NYC, Soul Sugar with the funky ‘Play It Back’ and Terence Blanchard with ‘A New World’ from his ‘Choices’ set. We round things off on a Euro slant with Allen Hoist, Dalindeo, Timo Lassy featuring José James and Fabio Nobile, with the album version of ‘Didn’t You Know’ from the excellent ‘Always Love’ set from 2008. We finish the two-hour show with another great track from the forthcoming CD from The Milano Jazz Dance Combo, and similarly to previous weeks, feature again the vocal talents of Katherine Ruestow.
