Welcome to the October episode of Aquarium, the monthly Live Tropical Fish podcast on SoulandJazz.com.
This month we start the show with a killer track: Calliope, taken from Andrew Hill’s 1975 released Blue Note double album One for One, featuring a fantastic Joe Henderson solo. You’ll love this track.
Then we have the Jesse Sharps Quintet with the Pan Afrikan People’s Arkestra with the Question from their 1985 album Sharps and Flat, and Nathan Davis with the funky Stick Buddy from the 1976 album If.
Three other great tracks follow: Minority Band with Journey to the Shore, Herbie Hancock with Hidden Shadows, from his 1973 album Sextant (with Buster Williams on the bass, Bennie Maupin on saxophone, Eddie Henderson on trumpet) and the vibraphonist Milt Jackson with Sunflower, from the 1973 CTI album with the same name, with Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Ron Carter on the bass, Herbie Hancock on keyboards and Billy Cobham on drums.
Then it’s time for Larry Willis, and we’ll listen to Out of the Coast from his 1974 Groove Merchant album Inner Crisis.
Explosive: V.S.O.P. (that is Ron Carter, Anthony Williams, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Freddie Hubbard…) from the 1977 live album Tempest in the Colosseum, plays a super-fast version of the Hubbard classic Red Clay.
A classic now, the Finnish combo Eero Koivistoinen Music Society with Suite 19 from their album Wahoo!, followed by Lonnie Smith’s Afrodesia, from the 1975 album with the same name.
Billy Higgins, plays Neptune from the album Soweto (recorded in Italy, there’s a track called Back in Bologna… funny!)
A super rare album, printed in Japan as part of a run of only 500 copies: Gary Bartz, Eddie Henderson and Norman Connors live at the Nemu Inn in 1975. We’ll listen to the great track Revelation.
The last track of this show is the Jesse Sharps Quintet with the Pan Afrikan People’s Arkestra again with the track The Goat and the Ramjam.
