Episode 8 – Hot Swing / Gypsy Jazz
Welcome to my monthly installment of music from the first half of the Jazz Continuum entitled “Swing!”
This month we explore a style of swing that was developed in France by a gypsy with a fire deformed left hand – Django Reinhardt. Instead of allowing his injury to stop him from playing guitar, he developed a whole new style dubbed as “Gypsy Jazz” which he played with Stephane Grappelli and his Hot Club De France.
So we start with several cuts illustrating Django & Stephane’s original sound, and move on to modern variations and interpretations of “Hot Swing” performed by Mark O’Connor’s Hot Swing Trio, Les Doights De L’Homme, Hot Club Sandwich, Hot Club of Detroit, Hot Club of San Francisco, Doc Severinsen along with Gil & Cartas, Hot Club of New Orleans, and Annie Sellick & The Hot Club . . . and finish up with a Grammy & Oscar nominated tune from the film “The Triplets of Belleville”
