This is the 400th podcast production on SoulandJazz.com, and thus I thought I would do something special to mark the occasion. To that end, I have selected two hours of my favorite jams from the current crop of contemporary jazz, funk & world groove CDs that have come my way in the past 9 months.
These songs all reached out, grabbed me by the neck and moved my head back & forth in syncopated response upon their initial hearing . . . including new and/or recent cuts by Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews, The Headhunters, Intuit, Global Noize, Beggar & Co, Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band (feat. Marcus Miller & Take 6), Idan K. & The Movement of Rhythm, Cindy Bradley, Sam Jenkins, Banda Black Rio, Bah Samba, Incognito, Sunlightsquare, William Green, Patrick Lamb, The Fantastics !, Mr. President, Selim Sivad, 11 Acorn Lane, Quasimode, Yellowjackets, Karabine, Blossom & Mandorla.
All in all, there are 27 songs creating a solid wall to wall groove, which sets a personal record for the number of songs played in a single podcast. Not a great feat in the larger scheme of things – but the fact that I could keep my mouth shut long enough to play so many songs is quite a testament to how much this music moves me.
