As I was writing this I heard of the sad passing of Maya Angelou, a literary behemoth who paved the way for people of colour to be accepted in the highest literary circles. Her gifts included the ability to add light, depth and shade to simple words on a page and to imbue her characters with the compassion and wisdom that defined her spirit.
As my wife will quite readily volunteer, I am not a person overly endowed in the gifts department. One of the few that I possess that I am most proud of is the ability to spot a decent tune when I hear it and the two hours of listening experience for this month is positively brimming with many of those.
On the interview front I talk to Snarky Puppy's Michael League about the phenomenal success of the band and the ins and outs of constant touring. I also have a quick chat with Gilles Peterson about his Brazilian Project Sonzeira. There's great new music from Mark de Clive Lowe, Daniel Crawford, Princess Freesia, Myles Sanko, Jarrod Lawson and my girl, from my second home of Atlanta; Avery Sunshine. There's Brazilian business from Jazzinho, Friends from Rio 2014, and Ed Motta, and a taste of the amazing Cuban project put together by Claudio Passavanti aka Sunlightsquare. To cap it all there's an epic tune from the 70's courtesy of drummer Idris Muhammad featuring the talents of Bob James and Randy Brecker.
