Aquarium
April 2010
The April edition of Aquarium has a very spiritual start: Invocation from the new Babatunde Lea album Umbo Weti: A Tribute To Leon Thomas. A double live disc featuring Patrice Rushen (keyboards), Ernie Watts (saxophone) and Dwight Trible (vocals), followed by Celebrate, a great track taken from the last Build An Ark album, a modal jazz inspired supergroup headed by Carlos Niño and performed in a sublime way by Dwight Trible again. Then we have the Carlos Garnett version of the classic Mother Of The Future and the Coltrane inspired Free Love by the Chicago saxophonist John Klemmer.
We continue this musical journey with Doug Carn’s tune Higher Ground (with Jean Carn on vocals), Things Cannot Last Forever by the Stanton Davis’ Ghetto Mysticism, and the joyous Dance Little Children, that begins with a call to children to embrace their ancestry and find peace and happiness in the everyday, in order to find a future.
And then… the super-funky The Kumquat Kids by Eddie Henderson, with the help of Alphonso Johnson on the bass, George Duke on the keyboards and Harvey Mason on drums… what a groove! Ramsey Lewis with Jungle Strut, from the 1974 hit Sun Goddess (#1 on the Billboard Black Albums chart as well as the Jazz Album chart).
A little ‘intermezzo’ by Marion Brown’s Sweet Earth Flying, shortly followed by another classic: The Loud Minority by the saxophonist Frank Foster (check out the incredible line-up), Somebody’s Calling My Name by Billy Wooten and Laughters by Norman Connors (lots of great musicians here too…).
Last two tracks before going to bed! John Coltrane by the powerful and deep voice of Dwight Trible, and the marvellous Celestial Blues, taken from the latest Povo album, The Yellow Of The Sun In You, and exceptionally performed by the always great Andy Bey.
