Aquarium
April 2011
Here we are. Ready for a brand new episode of Aquarium, the monthly Live Tropical Fish podcast on SoulandJazz.com!
Let’s start the show with a great song: Lanquidity by Sun Ra, from the 1978 album with the same title, followed by the keyboard player Mike Longo with Like a Thief in the Night, from the 1974 Groove Merchant album 900 Shares of the Blues (with Ron Carter on the bass, Joe Farrell on flute and Randy Brecker on trumpet), and the saxophone player Gato Barbieri with Marnie, from his 1974 Flying Dutchman album Yesterdays (with Ron Carter on the bass – again – Bernard Purdie on drums and Ray Mantilla on percussion).
Freddie Hubbard opens the second part of the show with the track Super Blue, with (guess who?)… Ron Carter on the bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, Kenny Barron on flute and Joe Henderson on saxophone. Two great songs follow: Oma Rakas by P.E. Hewitt Jazz Ensemble and Malika by McCoy Tyner, from the 1974 Blue Note album Asante.
The saxophone player David “Fathead” Newton opens the third part of the show, with the track Symphonette, from his 1972 album Lonely Avenue (produced by Roy Ayers). Then we have a recently discovered gem: a great version of Eddie Harris’ Freedom Jazz Dance by the group Both Worlds, from the 1974 album Don’tcha Hide It. Then a track from the composer and producer Richard Evans, Capricorn Rising featuring Linda Williams on vocals, and the B. Baker Chocolate Co. with the track Snowblower.
The last block starts with the track Vodoo Love Dance, by the trombone and conga player Melvyn Price, from his 1974 album Rhythm and Blues. Another great song: from the 1974 Blue Note album Saudade, Moacir Santos plays Off and On (with Lee Ritenour on guitar). The last two songs: Mike Longo again with Summer’s Gone, and another track from the Sun Ra’s album, Lanquidity, the hypnotic Twin Star of Thence.
Enjoy the show and please send your feedback to info@livetropicalfish.com
