Aquarium
February 2011
Welcome to the February episode of Aquarium, the monthly Live Tropical Fish podcast on SoulandJazz.com. This month we start the show with a great spiritual track: Space Is The Place, taken from the 1979 Sun Ra album The Other Side of The Sun, followed by a true classic: Come Into Knowledge from the 1977 RAMP album with the same title (produced by Roy Ayers) and I’ve Had A Little Talk by Horace Silver with the glorious voice of Andy Bey, from the 1970 album The United States Of Mind – Phase II – Total Response.
Then we have an inspired Leon Thomas with One from his first album Spirits Known And Unknown on Flying Dutchman label (with Cecil McBee on the bass and Roy Haynes on drums), the Norwegian jazz singer Karin Krog with Time To Go (with Steve Kuhn on keyboards and Steve Swallow on bass) from her 1975 album We Could Be Flying and Maulawi with Street Rap from the 1974 album Maulawi.
Four other great tracks follow: The Last Poets with Delights Of The Garden (with Bernard Purdie on drums), the piano player (not to be confused with the drummer with the same name) Chester Thompson with Powerhouse, from his 1971 Black Jazz Records album, Shamek Farrah with Waiting For Marvin and the saxophonist Joe Thomas with Flame, from his 1975 Groove Merchant album Masada.
And the last four tracks: Lonnie Liston Smith with Astral Traveling, from his 1973 Flying Dutchman album with the same name (Cecil McBee on bass, Joe Back on guitar, Mtume on percussion), the flute player Hubert Laws with Going Home, from his 1975 CTI album The Chicago Theme (arranged by Bob James, with Ron Carter on bass and Steve Gadd on drums), Steve Kuhn with A Change of Face, from his 1975 album Trance (with Steve Swallow on the bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums) and Ronnie Foster with Mystic Brew, from his first album Two Headed Freap on Blue Note Records.
Enjoy the show and please send your feedback to info@livetropicalfish.com
