Continuum – A Journey Through Jazz
Episode 3: Kind of Cool
Welcome back to another edition of “Continuum, A Journey Through Jazz”! This week we continue our journey into the realm of the cool – specifically the “cool jazz” of the 1950’s and early 60’s. What is it, where did it come from, and why is it cool? These are all questions addressed in this episode along with stunning sonic examples from some very cool cats, such as Miles Davis, Gil Evans, Vince Guaraldi, David Benoit, Dave Brubeck, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, the Modern Jazz Quartet, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans, and Stan Getz.
The first two episodes focused on Miles Davis and his fellow artists that took part in the album “Kind of Blue” – which can also be classified as “cool jazz” . . . as well as post bop, modal jazz, straight ahead jazz, mainstream jazz, and modern jazz. I know, I know, it’s a bit ridiculous — that’s a lot of categories for one style of music . . . and that’s partly what I’m dealing with in this episode and the next few to come. As your tour guide through the Jazz Continuum, I hope to trace the evolution of jazz and all its many varied styles over the past six decades. A lot of people tend to define jazz as one specific style, rather than seeing its influence and active presence in just about everything they listen to.
Hopefully by providing musical examples, some background information & definitions, as well as tracing the differences and evolutionary influences which gave birth to each new style . . . your appreciation and love of jazz will deepen, your mind and ears will expand, and it will feed your soul — or at least, that’s why I’m doing it!
I appreciate all the feedback – I would love to hear from you with any comments, questions, request or suggestions for future shows. Just hit me up at Scott@SoulandJazz.com
Enjoy the journey, and ask your friends to come along!
