Continuum – A Journey Through Jazz
Episode 20: Re-New Orleans
Five years ago this week, one of America’s greatest cities was 80% underwater. This show is a remembrance of what happened, a celebration of the New Orlean’s rebirth, and a call for continued renewal in the face of oil and all other odds.
We start off with Pops asking the question, “Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans?”. Harry Connick Jr. gives us an aural tour of the cities essence & John Boutte follows with a musical reflection on what happened 80 years ago in the streets of Evangeline, as well as 5 years ago in the Lower Nine. Terence Blanchard sounds off with his visceral emotional reaction to Katrina, Irvin Mayfield plays a Jazz eulogy for his beloved city – and then we Second Line through the streets as Los Hombres provide a ‘Creole Groove’ to let you know that some things never die.
Then, to reveal the cities rebirth I take you to a party featuring the funkiest bands in the Crescent City – Jon Cleary, Trombone Shorty, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Astral Project, Papa Grows Funk, and the Neville Brothers.
We end with a reflection from Harry Connick Jr., reminding us what happened so that it never happens again.
This show is like the city of New Orleans itself – full of sorrow and joy, reflection and celebration in the face of death itself. There is a time to mourn and a time to dance – and this show does both , , , with a big ‘ol dose of hope.
