Continuum – A Journey Through Jazz
Episode 22: New Jazz, Straight Ahead
As the title of this episode states – everything you’re about to hear is brand new . . . yet also classic, in the sense that it’s all straight ahead Jazz’ If you like this kind of thing, you’re in for a treat. However, if you think straight ahead Jazz is a little old fashioned for your taste, I think you might be surprised.
We open with some smouldering sax from Ernie Watts and some gospel flavored blues piano from the Dave Bass Quartet, followed by something acoustically funky from the Britton Brothers Band and some ’smooth’ straight ahead Jazz by Chris Massey’s ‘Nue Jazz Project.
We also hear the brilliant piano stylings of Cuba’s Chucho Valdés, and something brand new from bassist Chris Colangelo as well as the legendary James Moody. Esperanza Spalding has a very unique and fresh new CD, as does Danilo Perez – and you’ll hear a selection from each . . . closing with some wonderful sounds from Italy’s Gerardo Frisina.
I would love to know what you think and feel about this new music – as well as your suggestions for other artist that I may not know about – just drop a line to Scott@Soulandjazz.com.
