Episode 24: New Jazz, Straight Ahead (Part 2)
The week before last, I did an episode of Continuum featuring some of the new straight ahead/mainstream Jazz that had been released in recent months – but since so much good music has been released this year, I have to do it again . . . with more to come!
This episode begins with the #1 artist currently on the Jazz Week charts for Jazz radio: Tamir Hendelman. We follow that with an album that hasn’t been out long enough to hit the charts yet, the new live CD from the SFJAZZ Collective. You’ll also hear from Christian Howes, a Jazz violinist with a unique sound joined by guitarist Robben Ford.
There are also new CD’s out by some of the legends of jazz – such as a group called The Cookers, consisting of hard bop icons such as Billy Harper, Eddie Henderson, David Weiss, Craig Handy, George Cables, Cecil McBee and Billy Hart. The legendary trombonist Curtis Fuller also has a wonderful new CD from which we will sample.
Israeli guitarist Yotam joins up with Christian McBride & Roy Hargrove for some Soul Jazz; trombonist Conrad Herwig explores the Latin Side of Herbie Hancock with Randy Brecker, and then trombonist Michael Dease explores a Randy Brecker composition with Cyrus Chestnut, Sharel Cassity and others . . . and we end with some original vocal Jazz delivered with passion and soul by Gregory Porter.
It gives me hope and joy to see so much new, great, original Jazz still being released! Join me in the celebration of these new CDs and enjoy the ride!
