Episode 56: 2011 Straight Ahead Jazz
This edition of Continuum – A Journey Through Jazz provides a selection of new jazz from 2011 . . . but what kind of jazz you may ask? There are so many styles and rich variety within the Jazz Continuum that I feel the need to focus on a different aspect with each episode. So, for this edition I bring you “real jazz” as I have heard it classified, although I find that term rather divisive. I prefer the somewhat generic delineation of Mainstream Jazz or Straight Ahead Jazz, which provide a frame of expectation rather than an exclusive definition.
To that end I present ten tunes from ten new CD’s which represent a wide swath of current ‘Straight Ahead’ jazz featuring the Hristo Vitchev Quintet, the Croation jazz pianist Matija Dedic, Joe Gransden & His Big Band, Atlanta saxophonist Mace Hibbard, Tyler Gilmore’s Ninth & Lincoln (feat. Cuong Vu), the powerhouse Afro-Cuban jazz trio consisting of Stefon Harris, David Sanchez & Christian Scott, the Steven Lugerner Septet, Jeff McLaughlin Quartet, Charlie Haden Quartet West, and The New Gary Burton Quartet. This set is similar to the season – it heats up, it cools down, and it provides a soothing sonic accompaniment to these sultry summer days & nights.
I have had quite a few requests for new music, so I will be showcasing various jazz formats of new music interspersed with my continued journey through the music that got me into jazz in the first place, where I last left off in 1977.
