Continuum – A Journey Through Jazz
Episode 7: The Atlanta Jazz Festival – Part Two
This week our journey through jazz continues in the city of Atlanta, GA where we are preparing for one of the best jazz festivals in the world – and it’s absolutely free to the public! So, listen to both episodes and plan to make it down to Piedmont Park this coming weekend (May 29 & 30) for the 33rd Annual Atlanta Jazz Festival!
For more information about the festival, please visit: http://atlantafestivals.com
This episode features all the artists performing in Piedmont Park on Sunday, May 30th . . . and thus the show starts off with a couple of Stanley Clarke classics, mashed up and revisited by S.M.V. – a band comprised of bass legends Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, and Victor Wooten . . . followed by the lovely & soulful vocal stylings of Atlanta’s own Kathleen Bertrand . . . continuing on to something old, as well as something new by the Contemporary Jazz pioneers Spyro Gyra.
To prepare you for the celebration of the Lionel Hampton’s music happening as part of the festival, you’ll hear from Lionel himself back in 1941, as well as something more current from those that will be interpreting and celebrating his work – Jason Marsalis and Diane Schuur.
Stanley Clarke and Hiromi will be closing out the evening – so you’ll hear something from both of them, featured separately and together – as well as a short interview with Hiromi herself. I made the executive decision to let this show run a little longer in order to add a song by one of the local artist that will be performing on a secondary stage – Atlanta’s own Madoca – and I think you’ll be glad I did.
So, if you’ve been wondering whether or not you want to attend this year’s Atlanta Jazz Festival, this show (as well as last week’s edition) will enable you to hear all the artist before you decide if you want to attend, and who you would like to see. This is just a taste however, for the full banquet and ultimate Atlanta experience . . . go to Piedmont Park this coming Memorial Day weekend to hear it all live! I’ll see you there . . . but first – listen to the show, and enjoy the ride!
