Extra Inches: The Music of Chaka Khan

10th September 2010

Compiling this could have been all too obvious. What I’ve tried to do here is feature music from Chaka’s Rufus days through to newer material, working alongside the likes of Incognito, Mario Biondi, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. It’s all about balance. As much as I enjoyed I Feel For You when I was a teenager, wandering through the streets of New York with my FM walkman tuned to WBLS, it was always destined to be a huge commercial hit. Truthfully, she’s done many better songs than that. So, it’s not included here just yet, as I didn’t think it appropriate; maybe in Volume 2, but definitely by Volume 3!

Yvette Marie Stevens has made so much great music over the best part of thirty-five years, providing a cornucopia of delights to choose from. Twelve tracks make the first cut and range from 1978 – 2010. The playlist below gives you all the details, but look out for Pain in particular. A track that’s a huge favourite of mine which was only ever included on the Living Single soundtrack: a criminal waste.

Volume Two? Not far behind. Enjoy!
