Extra Inches: The Music of Incognito
This show’s been on my mind for a moment now and following recent The Music of… podcasts featuring Stevie Wonder and Earth, Wind and Fire, along with a new album dropping next week, now seemed the perfect time to celebrate the music of Jean-Paul ‘Bluey’ Maunick’s creation: Incognito.
Rather than this be an advert for the new set Tranatlantic RPM, which is pretty damn good by the way (two tracks are featued here), this show highlights the longevity and development of the London based band who have been making music in their own right for nearly thirty years – ever since Bluey’s exodus from Light Of The World and the creation of Incognito back in 1981
Ten albums are featured here with eleven tracks in total. From the debut set Jazz-Funk in 1981 to their newest offering in 2010, it’s really interesting to compare tracks such as Incognito to Freedom To Love and Always There. It might be said they have a sound, but over a period of time it’s most definitely a varied one.
On a personal note and something I’ve thought of more than once this year – as the Queen’s honours are handed out in the UK for services to industry, sporting excellence, the arts, etc. then I’d like to nominate Jean-Paul Maunick. Thirty years at the top of his game and still going strong. I’d call that an Olympic effort and certainly worthy of official recognition. He’s already got my vote.
