Extra Inches – The Music of Raphael Saadiq & Tony Toni Toné
It occurred to me recently, whilst listening to Tony Toni Toné’s ‘House Of Music’ just how much I love that album. For that reason alone I thought that a feature on the music of Raphael Saadiq along with bands he has been synonymous with: the Tonys and Lucy Pearl, would be a marvellous idea. Covering over three decades then, here’s a fourteen track ‘Selection’ from eight albums that drip with pure soul and funk. From the killer cut from ‘The Way I See It ‘ with Stevie back in 2008 to adventures with D’Angelo and Q-Tip in 2002 and 1999 respectively.
On a personal note, I think Rafael Saadiq is one of the most important figures in soul music currently and as a solo artist has that career defining album still to come. He’s dabbled with the retro sound recently but it’ll be even more interesting to see what’s coming next. [BH]
