Extra Inches: The Music of Roy Ayers (The Early Years 1963 -1973)
1st October 2010
For those of you that know this vibes legend’s music from the late 70’s, you may not be aware of the incredible Jazz that he was playing in the 60’s. This then is the first of three shows highlighting his incredible journey and even during research, it was quite awe inspiring to begin to understand the overall picture of this man’s exceptional career.
Eleven tracks are on offer and we start in 1963 with Roy featured as part of The Jack Wilson Quartet playing a version of Ramblin’ on Atlantic Records. Three more albums were to follow on the same label: Virgo Vibes (1967), Stoned Soul Picnic (1968) and Daddy Bug (1969), which began to chart the progress of his Jazz moving towards the Funk; all three are represented here. The forming of Roy Ayers Ubiquity in 1971 led to an incredibly productive period. Inclusive of the Coffy soundtrack, six albums were released in between then and 1973 with seminal moments littering nearly all of these projects. Think Red, Black & Green, Sweet Tears and you’ll get the picture. Also evident in this period was his delicious blend of Soul meeting Jazz and the developing sound of his man/woman vocal arrangements. I wrestled with what track to finish with and settled for the Brawling Broads track from Coffy – sorry, I just couldn’t resist that one.
The question of selecting tracks for the next show becomes even more problematic. Roy Ayers was, and still is, a one-man music making machine – and certainly one of the most significant musicians in the best part of fifty years. I think the word is ‘respect’. Volume Two will be here shortly. [BH]
