Extra Inches: The Music of The Mizell Brothers
It was never a question of if, but when we would get round to producing a fitting tribute to the genius of Larry and Fonce Mizell – The Mizell Brothers. On offer here are twelve wonderful tracks that highlight their ability to write, produce and create a sound that many have tried, but failed to emulate.
In the early 1970’s the brothers formed Sky High productions and it is here, from the early part of their career as producers, that we concentrate on. From their Blue Note debut in 1972 with Donald Byrd’s Black Byrd through to the Soul of Rance Allen’s Reason To Survive in 1977, artists such as Bobbi Humphrey, Roger Glenn, Johnny Hammond and Gary Bartz all sounded magnificent under the watchful eyes and finely tuned ears of The Mizell Brothers.
Of course this is only part of the tale. In different capacities they worked alongside The Moments, LTD, The Jackson 5, Mary Wells and The Blackbyrds, but this is another story for another day. For the moment, treat your ears to some of the finest Jazz-Funk from the 70’s or from any decade for that matter.
