The Music of: SOLAR (Sound Of Los Angeles Records)
Jeffrey Daniels might have had those ‘body popping’ moves but it was duo of Howard Hewett and Jody Watley who could sing as well as anyone and were the driving force behind Shalamar. I was introduced to the band in 1979 with their Big Fun album and was hooked immediately. Stable mates such as The Whispers now take swathes of my shelf space with music from their 30+ year career, but the recordings of these artists along with Midnight Star, Bill Wolfer, Carrie Lucas et al on SOLAR, gives a fantastic snapshot of the disco era of the late 70’s through until the more club orientated mid-80’s when the label was at its grooviest best. Like ‘The Music of: Jam & Lewis’, it’s hard to pick the first 12 tracks to feature here, but now we’ve started, Volume 2 won’t be far behind. BH
