Jazz 60 (Remixed)
24th March 2010
I must say, it is an honour to finally be a part of the soulandjazz.com family. I am looking forward to this musical journey we are all going to experience and have to thank my fellow DJ and friend Brian Hurst for this one of a kind opportunity.
The premiere of Jazz 60 (Remixed) is an introduction not only to this new podcast, but an introduction to me, Nicole Sweeney. I personally feel that there is a responsibility I hold presenting this music to you. Music is spiritual and emotional and I don’t feel I can bring it to you properly without sharing a piece of myself with you each and every time we meet.
We kick off today’s show with Robert Glasper from his most recent album Double Booked which I always felt was a great CD for both classic jazz lovers as well as younger listeners that may just be starting to get into jazz or not as the case may be! We then dive into a classic set because, of course, you’ve always got to pay homage to those that came before. We will hear from one of jazz’s finest, Philadelphia’s own Lee Morgan, with a tune that is sure to come crashing through your speakers, and then we’ll slow it down just a bit with a voice like no other, the fabulous Shirley Bassey…and I promise the transition will be an enjoyable one. One of America’s best and most talented producers, Mr. Quincy Jones, has a real groooovy (no typo-the extra oooo’s are needed for this one) track that will please your ears and you can never deny the pure goodness of sound that comes from flautist Bobbi Humphrey.
Next, we’ll hear from the cats and kittens that are not only making the jazz world stand up and take notice, but perking up the ears of folks that didn’t think jazz could be as cool as it is: New York’s Vijay Iyer Trio gives us a real hip and funky spin on a Ronnie Foster original, saxophonist Ted Nash takes you to another level with a Henry Mancini original, and a young lady by the name of Gretchen Parlato seals the deal with a Herbie Hancock classic that will make you float away. As the saying goes, “Go out with a bang” and that is exactly what I did on today’s first show. The final song of the show then is one that seems to get me right in the soul. It’s almost as if the bass becomes my heart beating…
And there you have it ladies and gentlemen, the very first episode of Jazz 60 (Remixed). Look forward to more of the smoothest blend you ever heard consisting of the classics, current, and everything in between.
Since I feel music makes us all family here at soulandjazz.com, please feel free to contact me with any requests, feed back, or anything else that’s on your mind: nicole@soulandjazz.com. I really look forward to hearing from you. NS
