The S.O.U.L. of Jazz – 27th May 2010
Three, they say, is the magic number. This statement rings true for my third installment of The S.O.U.L. of Jazz and this selection was inspired by the energy of Spring, which is in full bloom here in the ATL.
The show begins with a heavy Jazz lean with the legendary McCoy Tyner featuring the bluesy guitar work of one Carlos Santana. Nu-Jazz offerings from Elizabeth Shepherd, Soil & “Pimp” Sessions, Povo, Brian Hogans and Trombone Shorty prove that jazz is far from being placed on life support! Tracks from Erykah Badu, Yahzarah, Carmen Rodgers and Avery Sunshine remind us that it’s the women who are currently running the soul world! There’s a dose of classic 80’s energy from the likes of Kashif, Manzel and Twilight plus soulful dance sounds from Pete Simpson, Orgone and Emantative that will have you bustin’ a move.
