It feels so good to see the first rites of spring coming to the fore and I’ve put together an eclectic mix of new, soulful tunes to accompany these springtime vibes!!
Things get underway with heavy sounds from the Fra Fra Big Band and I can’t ever remember hearing a big band cover the music of Fela! There’s new music from The Olatuja Project, fresh sounds from BRZZVLL out of Belgium and brand new music from the Queen of Acid Jazz, Jhelisa. The trio, King, who are making considerable noise on the social media front, are represented here and there’s some brilliance from one of my favorite groups out of Finland, Rime! The dance community is represented well in this podcast, with new music from The Rurals out of the UK, Gregory Porter’s 1960 What? receiving the remix treatment from Sweden’s Opolopo (big tune at The Hurst Selection launch party) and one of the greatest voices in classic disco/boogie, Jocelyn Brown, gives us something new and fresh! I’d be remiss if I didn’t feature something from my brother in Soul and Jazz, Brian Hurst’s compilation, The Hurst Selection 1 – Avery Sunshine gives us her now classic, I Got Sunshine, with a nice new sheen from Atlanta’s Mass Sheen that would make Dr. Buzzard proud!
