The Hurst Selection is a joyous affair this week with new music in abundance. First off though, it’s easier to tell you about 4 from, this week featuring the music of one of the greatest bands ever: Earth, Wind & Fire. A musical career that’s spanned four decades and produced so many evocative memories. The tunes on offer here cover an eighteen year span, from the albums ‘That’s The Way Of The World’ in 1975 to ‘Millennium’ in 1993. The rest of tracks in the first hour are from 2009: there’s the forthcoming single from Whitney Houston – and what a track it is, two tracks from Ledisi’s new album and the quite wonderful Michael Olatuja from his forthcoming album ‘ Speak’. Other goodies come from Eric Roberson, M-Swift, Corneille, All 4 One, Teena Marie and certainly one of the tracks of the year so far: ‘When Will You Call’ from Terence Blanchard’s new CD featuring Bilal; amazing.

In the Jazzier Side of Life in Hour Two, it’s a mix of the old and new. On the newer side it’s good grooves from the latest album offerings from George Benson and Brian Bromberg, alongside newer cats such as Stefon Harris, Nathan Haines and Sweden’s quite excellent, The Quiet Nights Orchestra. Looking back, we feature such luminaries as Frank Sinatra, Benny Golson, Chico Hamilton, The Brecker Bothers and the spellbinding combination of Freddie Hubbard and Al Jarreau with ‘Little Sunflower’.
