On this week’s Hurst Selection we have 4 from the legend that is Mr. Leon Ware. In town for a gig this Thursday 16th July at London’s Jazz Cafe, we pay tribute to one of the true soul legends and feature tracks that he’s written for Minnie Ripperton, produced for Marvin Gaye, and others that he’s sung himself. There’s classic music from the great Bobby Womack, the late Carl Anderson and a great cover of Al Johnson and Jean Carne’s I’m Back For More by Tavares. There’s a new name to watch out for on a cover of the New Holiday’s song, Maybe So, Maybe No. That man is Mayer Hawthorne and we’re loving his voice. Larisa Dolina is still “sing- ging”, but George Duke has produced a masterful track here that’s probably created the most feedback thus far at S&J. There’s also more of the current crop from Teena Marie, Will Downing and Makeda. You’ll also find some classic grooves from Ingram, Beloyd and the Leon Ware penned, Michael Wycoff track, Looking Up To You. If that wasn’t enough…
In Hour Two, we move towards the Jazzier Side Of Life where the observational lyrics and brilliance of both Michael Franks and Ben Sidran start us off. There’s a classic from Wornell Jones and BH’s favourite Ramsey Lewis track, Brazilica. From the Renaissance era comes Lonnie Liston Smith and some left field jazz from Groove Collective and Urban Jazz Network. From the land of the rising sun comes the famous Lament from Toshiyuki Honda and from Brazil, Gilberto Gil with a track from his Nightingale album. Finally, the magnificent Mizell’s produced Bobbi Humphrey track Uno Esta and the future classic Duke Zillia from Walter Beasley’s latest offering, Free Your Mind.
