On The Hurst Selection this week we have 4 from: George Benson. With a fine new album just around the corner we thought we’d celebrate some of the great man’s music. You’ll find tracks recorded with Quincy Jones, ‘Little’ Louie Vega and Kenny ‘Dope’ Gonzalez, plus something damn funky from the new set Songs and Stories, recorded with Norman Brown. It’s not in store until the 24th August, but as you know, we don’t like keeping things to ourselves.
Also in the first hour we look at some of the current crop and consider music from Will Downing, Mayer Hawthorne, Vanessa Williams and Australia’s Kylie Auldist, both flying solo and as a guest with Cookin’ On 3 Burners. There’s one of souls unsung heroes, Arnold McCuller, the respectful Kevin Whalum, plus a track from Heavy’s album and an excellent cover of Nina Simone’s Be My Lover from Joy Jones. Before we move into Jazzier Side Of Life we make time for three killer soul cuts from Donny Hathaway, Curtis Mayfield and Ed Robinson, with a passionate and compelling track Hey Blackman, taken from the excellent forthcoming compilation, Good To The Last Drop.
In the Jazzier Side Of Life we look to some jazz-funk classics to ably entertain: Herbie Hancock with Carlos Santana, Brian Bromberg’s amazing take on Shining Star, classics from Tony Williams, Webster Lewis, Donald Byrd and Deodato, plus the man appearing at the Jazz Café in London this Wednesday, 22nd July: Lee Ritenour. He’ll be ably supported then by Patrice Rushen but here he gets funky on a track from his 1981 album Rit. We end the set with another track from George Benson’s Songs and Stories, this time with a track written for him by the great Lamont Dozier.
Enjoy!
