Better late than never, The Hurst Selection roles up it’s sleeves and get’s down to business with a twenty-eight track selection. If you’re into percentages, 50% of the music comes from 2009/10 with a retro 39% from the 60’s & 70’s, as we move soulfully through the decades.
Firstly though, 4 from this week comes from a forthcoming compilation in the UK called ‘Divas of Motown’. We’ve tracks featuring such soul legends as Gladys Knight, Mary Wells, Brenda Holloway and The Supremes, which gives you more than a flavour of what’s on offer. Part of the Motown 50 celebrations, this really is a phenomenal compilation with a stellar line-up and certainly one to look forward to.
At the outset, Brian Hurst features Terje Lie’s great cover of the Roy Ayres classic ‘Red, Black And Green’, another track from the soulstress Marva King’s new CD ‘The One’ and the ‘Maybe’ track from Angie Stone’s forthcoming ‘Unexpected’ set on Stax. Newer music in this edition also comes from The Soul Harmonics, with the title track from their ‘These Times’ set, and we feature again the lady of the moment: N’dambi, along with music from Mica Paris, William Green, Ellis Phelps, Marcell & the Truth, Matt Bianco and the delightful Tracy Hamlin. There’s also another chance to hear Manchester’s Trus’me, alongside Amp Fiddler, Brenda Boykin, back with Club de Belugas and the title track from the new set ‘Zoo Zizaro’. We’ve also a new track from Karen Bernod called ‘Evolution’ and we have to say we’re delighted to be hearing from her again.
Classic soul tracks this week have in part, a strong Philly influence as we take a moment to remember music from some of our heroes: Dexter Wansel, Jean Carn, Billy Paul, The Futures, Gloria Gaynor and Dee Dee Sharp, with ‘Invitation’ – one of the greatest soul cuts ever! Other great moments come from Chaka Khan, the Four Tops and Roy Ayers himself this time, alongside his former collaborator, Wayne Henderson with ‘For Real’, a brilliant track from the ‘Step Into Our Life’ set in 1978.
