Hear & Now

4th February 2012

As Herbie once penned, it’s “Just Around The Corner”. Indeed it is.

The weekend sees Brian Hurst deliver 24 musical treats as part of The Hurst Selection, which continues in the latest ready-to-wear, two hour, CD quality episode. The playlist will be available Monday so trust in us and go on a aural journey of delight as BH treats you to music especially from 2012 that other radio stations probably won’t of heard of this time next year. Click on the link above to take you to the download page of the show and get your weekend really moving.

Boldly striding into February is the Jazz Evangelist, back again and celebrating in some style with Episode 73 of Continuum – A Journey Through Jazz and more incredible Jazz-Funk from 1978. Heatwave, Earth, Wind & Fire, Roy Ayers, The Jacksons, Lenny White (feat. Chaka Khan), Ashford & Simpson, Stanley Clarke, L.T.D., Rick James, Bootsy Collins, Bell & James, Idris Muhammad, Gene Chandler, Raydio, The Pockets, Pleasure, Donald Byrd, Aquarian Dream, Isley Brothers, Tower Of Power, Average White Band, Bar-Kays & Mother’s Finest…. Get the picture? Over two hours in fact of some incredible music to download in CD quality. There’s only one thing left to do. Click on the link above and get the party started.

It’s “Olá” once again to Paul Cutting aka @soulcuts, who’s here each week to present Classic SoulCuts – another one hour of legendary soul tracks taken from three decades: the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. Show 16 has further deliciousness on offer – from Jazzyfatnastees to Johnnie Taylor and Sam Salter to Sweetback. So, without further ado, click on the link above and join Paul as he takes you back for a moment. Way back. It’ll make your ears smile.

Wednesday sees Mike Chadwick aka @mrchadders return to present the European Jazz Union – the latest weekly offering from SoulandJazz.com, highlighting the best jazz music that Europe has to offer. His next adventure awaits so please feel free to click on the link above, download an hour’s worth of jazz flavours, and allow Mike to introduce us all to something just a little to the left. Nice. Very nice.

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the coolest man we know: DJ Cozy Shawn. He’ll be here each week to select some classic 70’s grooves that are as timeless as they are magnificent for our brand new show: Get Cozy. Nostalgic it may be, but there’s nothing dated in the sounds you’ll be hearing as this man really does know how to get down. Show 1 is wound up and ready to play and believe us when we tell you, your ears are going thank you for the love they’ll be getting. Click on the link above and allow Shawn to show you just how much.

Welcome to the 20th installment of Body Music, our one-hour weekly work-out mix that’ll make you hot! Presented by that busy boy Paul Cutting, aka @soulcuts, who’s here to steer you in the right direction. Sixty minutes in the mix that’ll certainly make the gym a happier place to visit. No excuses! Download and let’s be magnificent out there.

Sunday once again brings about another fabulous edition of Deep Soul Sides – a very soulful weekend offering from SoulandJazz.com. Produced by Echoes magazine Editor and deep soul aficionado Chris Wells, this week he’s taking a closer look at the music of Anthony Hamilton. 15 tracks lay in wait that give a wonderful snapshot of one of the living soul greats; all without any of that DJ interuptus. Click on the link above and download further delicious soul offerings from one of Leeds United’s most soulful supporters.

And they’re back! Something rather delicious is served up as we welcome back the Live Tropical Fish with another fabulous edition of Aquarium. From a great 1969 Joe Henderson track to a 1980 Herbie Hancock classic, passing through Pat Martino, Herb Geller feat. Mark Murphy, Archie Shepp feat. Leon Thomas, Kenny Barron and Woody Shaw… Click on the link below for your chance to download an incredible 16 track jazz odyssey. From Bologna to the rest of the world – this is what we’re talking about: Stereo, not stereotypical.

Here’s something brand new from DJ Applejac. Back, bigger, bolder and badder than ever before, the one-man wolfpack returns with January’s splendid edition of Shecky’s Groovy Grab Bag. 21 tracks and 85 minutes sees Uncle Shecky doing what he does and doing it magnificently. From the classic sounds of Roy Ayers and George Duke to the new cats on the block: Lianne La Havas and Michael Olatuja, the man from Atlanta’s got it going on. Click on the link above to download and keep your day on the most soulful of tracks.

Something a little different and why not? Extra Inches: The Ladies Vol.3
as it says in the title is all about the ladies this time round as we feature 14 tracks from the current crop of female magnificence. With cuts from the amazing forthcoming album from Esperanza Spalding to the deliciousness of Ntjam Rosie. 65 minutes that’ll make your ears say “Thank you” for keeping your eyes, and ears of course, on all things SoulandJazz.com. Click on the link above, download and take a moment to appreciate the finer things in life.

Heading your way is the third show from Mr. Terry Keels or as he’s more affectionately known – TK. Just Jazz is, as it says in the title, just jazz, and features over two hours of the coolest tracks you can imagine from cats such as Blue Mitchell, Brian Bromberg, Sean Jones and Sonny Rollins. Note the word cool, not smooth. That’s not where TK’s coming from. He’s relaxing into the role nicely so we think it only right and proper to share this man’s knowledge, passion and desire to talk about and play the jazz. To download, just click on the link above and show your ears some of that sophisticated love.

Welcome to the first of our label Showcases featuring the music from the catalogue of SoulMusic.com – specialists in the reissues of Classic Soul CD’s. Presented by Brian Hurst, 11 tracks are on offer giving you a real flavour for the music currently available on the label: think Tavares, Al Johnson, Tata Vega and Natalie Cole. Crystal? You’ll see the links on the playlist which will direct you to Amazon.co.uk where all of the great music we’ll be featuring each week will be available to buy. To get your ears thinking about that, click on the Showcases link and let’s serve you up some further deliciousness.

We’re delighted to present another magnificent installment of Talking Jazz with Ben Sidran and in this show it’s the turn of the sax legend that is the late, great, Michael Leonard Brecker. Episode Eight is produced by the Jazz Evangelist, Scott Fugate, who says that he tried to “…illustrate his words, capture his brilliance, showcase his unique way of hearing & creating melodies, the way he blended harmonies, the beauty & soul of his style which often takes my breath away, and his humility & gentle spirit which he lived and made audible through his horn”. And he certainly succeeded. The show is available by clicking on the above link and please – don’t be afraid to tell everyone you know to come on over and help themselves to a wonderful CD quality download from a series that we’re immensely proud of.
