It’s a story of great endurance if you think about it. Thirty-eight years and counting is the time covered by the successful careers of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen; independently, and together as Steely Dan.

These two gentlemen have provided us with a catalogue of music which has an enduring appeal and thankfully the ability to defy the notion of both stereotype and the sad attitudes of bigots. From Steely Dan’s debut in 1972 through to Donald Fagen’s last solo project back in 2006, twelve tracks are on offer here which prove beyond all doubt, both the durability and versatility of Messrs. Becker and Fagen. The proof is in the listening.

Episode 20: Re-New Orleans

Five years ago this week, one of America’s greatest cities was 80% underwater. This show is a remembrance of what happened, a celebration of the New Orlean’s rebirth, and a call for continued renewal in the face of oil and all other odds.

We start off with Pops asking the question, “Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans?”. Harry Connick Jr. gives us an aural tour of the cities essence & John Boutte follows with a musical reflection on what happened 80 years ago in the streets of Evangeline, as well as 5 years ago in the Lower Nine. Terence Blanchard sounds off with his visceral emotional reaction to Katrina, Irvin Mayfield plays a Jazz eulogy for his beloved city – and then we Second Line through the streets as Los Hombres provide a ‘Creole Groove’ to let you know that some things never die.

Then, to reveal the cities rebirth I take you to a party featuring the funkiest bands in the Crescent City – Jon Cleary, Trombone Shorty, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Astral Project, Papa Grows Funk, and the Neville Brothers.

We end with a reflection from Harry Connick Jr., reminding us what happened so that it never happens again.

This show is like the city of New Orleans itself – full of sorrow and joy, reflection and celebration in the face of death itself. There is a time to mourn and a time to dance – and this show does both , , , with a big ‘ol dose of hope.

August 2010

Hi Folks and welcome to the August episode of Aquarium, the monthly Live Tropical Fish podcast on SoulandJazz.com, a special all-music holiday edition of 21 tracks focused on Black Jazz of the seventies with some incursions in Funk and Jazz-Funk from the same period.

We start our show with a killer track: Here and Now, from the Headhunters first album Survival of the Fittest, produced by Herbie Hancock, with Paul Jackson on the bass, Blackbird McKnight on guitar and Harvey Mason on percussion (not on drums).

Two great tracks follow: Ayoka, from E.W. Wainwright’s album African Roots of Jazz, and The Last Poets with Tribute to Obabi (Ogun) from their album Chastisment.

We continue with Donald Smith, the younger brother of the more famous Lonnie Liston Smith, with the track Nameless from his 1976 album Luv (featuring Cecil McBee and Jack Dejohnnette), Gregory Charles Royal with Dancer from the album Dream Come True and the Ensemble Al-Salaam with Peace from their 1974 album The Sojourner on Strata East label.

Now we have a little Jazz-Funk insert, with Rien Ne Va Plus by Funk Factory, from their 1975 album featuring Steve Gadd on drums, Anthony Jackson on bass, and the Polish jazz legends Michal Urbaniak and Urszula Dudziak. There’s also Eddie Russ with Take a Look at Yourself (this guy knows how to play his Rhodes) from his 1978 album of the same title.

Ronnie Laws comes next, with Tidal Wave from his 1975 album Pressure Sensitive on Blue Note records, Roy Ayers with Daddy Bug from his 1969 album featuring Buster Williams on bass and Herbie Hancock on keyboards, produced by Herbie Mann.

Also, three very spiritual tracks: Lightmen Plus One with Cold Bair, from their 1972 album Energy Control Center, Bobby Jackson with Paul’s Ark from his 1966 album The Cafe Extra-Ordinaire Story and Cecil McBee with Tulsa Black from his 1974 album Mutima on Strata East label.

Then we have Dee Dee Bridgewater with her version of People Make The World Go Round, The Ensemble Al-Salaam again with Circles, and Juju with Nia, from their 1974 album Chapter Two: Nia.

A little Jazz-Funk again with Tom Scott’s Looking Out for Number 7 (obviously in 7) and the german combo Dave Pike Set with But Anyway (in 6) from their 1972 album Infra-Red.

The last three tracks? Sax player Rudolph Johnson with Fonda, from his 1971 album Spring Rain on Black Jazz records, Shamek Farrah and Sonelius Smith with Juluis from their 1977 album The World of Children on Strata East and Eddie Kendricks with the truly inspired My People… Hold On from his 1972 album People… Hold On.

Extra Inches: The Music of Stevie Wonder Vol.2
(Tracks hand-selected by legendary baritone, Mr. Jamie Davis)

Following on from our first installment, we are proud to present Extra Inches: The Music of Stevie Wonder Vol. 2 – this time round it’s Jamie Davis, who has kindly taken time out from his busy touring schedule to select tracks by the great man that have inspired him over the last forty years. His thoughts on Steveland Morris? “There is no other musician that has created so many rhythmic passages that dominates the music scene today”. How could we disagree? He’s also added some notes to each song, giving you his personal view on this thirteen track, musical showcase.

As (Songs In the Key Of Life – 1976)
This is one of the most vocally astounding songs Stevie ever sang – certainly not for an inexperienced vocalist.

If Your Love Cannot Be Moved (A Time To Love 2005)
A man being stuck in a rut and never experiencing the true meaning of love for mankind. Once again, a stunning show of versatility of this man’s voice.

Superstition (Talking Book – 1972)
He knocks it out the park with this funk masterpiece.

Master Blaster (Jammin’) (Hotter Than July – 1980)
What can I say? Grown up funk.

Never In Your Sun (In Square Circle – 1985)
He found her, but couldn’t make it work. Musically brilliant.

Send One Your Love (Journey Through The Secret Life Of Plants – 1979)
Mature vocal styling with island influences.

Pastime Paradise (Songs In The Key Of Life – 1976)
This tune takes mans seemingly never ending struggle with himself

Golden Lady (Innervisions – 1973)
My take on this one is? He’s beggin!

Overjoyed (In Square Circle – 1985)
This tune is almost cosmic in its haunting melody. It’s one my favourites!

Heaven Is 10 Zillion Light Years Away (Fullfillingness First Finale – 1974)
Stevie’s expression of his spiritual awareness. He lets us look inside and understand his view on spirituality.

Ribbon In The Sky (Stevie Wonder’s Original Musiquarium I – 1981)
He does it again, penning a tune that can be transformed into any format .

All Is Fair In Love (Innervisions – 1973)
One again the vocals are absolutely masterful.

Free (Characters – 1987)
The master at work with his revelation of his spirit.

<itunes:subtitle>Extra Inches: The Music of Stevie Wonder Vol.2</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Following on from our first instalment, we are proud to present Extra Inches: The Music of Stevie Wonder Vol. 2 - this time round it’s Jamie Davis who has kindly taken time out from his busy touring schedule to select tracks by the great man, that have inspired him over the last forty years. His thoughts on Steveland Morris? “There is no other musician that has created so many rhythmatic passages that dominates the music scene today.” How could we disagree? He’s also added some notes to each song, giving you his personal view on this thirteen track, musical showcase.

As (Songs In the Key Of Life – 1976)
This is one of the most vocally astounding songs Stevie ever sang, - certainly not for a beginning vocalist..

He found her, but couldn't make it work.

He's beggin!

Overjoyed (In Square Circle – 1985)
This tune is almost cosmic in its haunting melody. It’s one my favourites!

Heaven Is 10 Zillion Light Years Away (Fullfillingness First Fianle – 1974)
Stevie’s expression of his spiritual awareness. He lets us look inside and understand his view on spirituality.

Ribbon In The Sky (Stevie Wonder's Original Musiquarium I – 1981)
He does it again, penning a tune that can be transformed into any format .

All Is Fair In Love (Innervisions – 1973)
One again the vocals are absolutely masterful.

Free (Characters – 1987)
The master at work with his revelation of his spirit.

Episode 19: New Grooves

I thought it was about time I got my groove back, so I present you with twelve tracks that I’ve been enjoying this summer to facilitate your own personal groove in these final days of the season.

We start the party with something new from Richard Earnshaw and move immediately to current tunes from old masters of Funk & Fusion – Stanley Clarke, George Duke, and Lenny White. We also hear new songs in a style that used be known as ‘Acid Jazz’ rom Incognito, Live Tropical Fish, Elizabeth Shepherd, and Dorian Wright . . . today I think we just call this style of music ‘good’ and ‘funky’. If you stick with the groove straight through, you’ll also hear some new music that’s hard to classify in a singular genre from Derek Frank, Gerardo Frisina, Big Band Splash and Claudia Hayden.

All in all it’s a stone cold gas with some Jazz, Funk, Soul, R&B and Latin mixed in a brand new bag full of groove gumbo. So, kick back, dig, and enjoy the ride!

If you have any comments, questions, ideas, suggestions or submissions – as always, I would love to hear from you at Scott@SoulandJazz.com.

The Ladies – a series that we know will run and run. Where though, is the right place to start? In no order of preference we begin with Cherokee from ten years back and her fine set ‘I Love You … Me’ – we play the marvellous ‘Misty’. The much missed Aaliyah is next, reminding us of the obvious talent this young lady possessed. Such vintage performers as Gladys Knight, Angela Winbush, Anita Baker, Donna Summer, Chaka Khan and Patti Austin are also on hand to lend some serious weight, not literally I hope you understand, to the proceedings. The once teenage sensation Evelyn Champagne King is also here, with the Kashif produced ‘Back to Love’, as are one of the great soul pairings: Millie Jackson and Isaac Hayes from the ‘Royal Rappin’’ set in 1980. Also here are Viola Wills with ‘Dare To Dream’ from 1985 and a lady with a very bright future: Debόrah Bond, with one of the soul cuts of the decade: ‘See You In My Dreams’. It’s all good.

The second installment from these two powerhouses of Soul and Funk sees an eleven track ‘Selection’ from 1980-2009. From Lady T in 1980 to Congo Square last year, proof if it were ever needed of these two’s enduring appeal. There also the full length version of Standing On The Top which sees Rick James aongside The Temptations on this powerhouse of a song. Volume 1 was good, Volume 2 helps paint a more complete picture. Enjoy!

Episode 18: Caliente Chill

In the heat of mid-August, with summer vacations coming to a close, I wanted to offer something rather exotic – well, depending on where you’re from . . . if you’re Brazilian it’s probably not so exotic, but everyone else will most assuredly think it is. Thus I bring you “Caliente Chill” which doesn’t make a lot of sense, since Caliente is a Spanish word meaning hot, and pretty much every song in this episode is in Portuguese . . . but leave it to an American to mix up languages. Hopefully the music will make up for the fact that I didn’t know the Portuguese word for “hot”.

So – get a cool beverage, kick back and enjoy the bossa groove, summer samba, and chilled Brazilian beats presented by Jazzelicious, Jazzinho, Marissa, Bossacucanova, and Randy Brecker as well as Esperanza Spalding, Paula Morelenbaum, Rosalia De Sousa, S-Tone Inc., Nick Bernard, Nova Nola (featuring Sasha Masakowski) and Ernest “EC3″ Coleman.

Welcome to the dog days of summer! August’s edition of Downbeat starts off with the sweet vocals of Chelsea Baratz and grooves smoothly from that moment on. There’s Russell Gunn, Jeff Bradshaw, and Atlantan, Rod Young plus Donnie and Anthony David, who bring a soulful touch to the two-hours. Further down the line we serve music from John Beasley and there’s a quick nod to ‘those who have walked before us’ with a tune from Quincy Jones. Towards the tail end of proceedings vocal harmonies are served by Bobby McFerrin from the 2010 release, VOCAbuLaries.

Back for August and ready for your ears, a twenty-three track ‘Selection’ presented exclusively on SoulandJazz.com

Will a little Soul help make your day somewhat easier? Maybe some Kenny Lattimore with Brian Culbertson, or from Transatlantic RPM, Incognito along with the guesting Mario Biondi. We’ve music from Beverley Trotman, Joy Dennis and Kabanya Chemise with a killer track from her forthcoming The Mosaic album. Also, and hot from Hawaii – Dorian Wright with two incredible songs from his Mind Full Of Music album.

Some Jazz perhaps? We’ve some classic Jeff Lorber Fusion, Esperanza Spalding from her forthcoming Chamber Music Society set and out of Holland: Rik Mol – or maybe it’s the Funk you’re looking for? Four tracks from Cameo could well do the trick and with music from 1975 – 1984, their musical development is on show for all to hear. We’ve also Derek Frank’s take on a Curtis classic, Brian Culbertson along with the returning Chuck Brown from his new XII set, The Stanley Clarke Band and Snarky Puppy with the super hot Whitecap track.

Whatever’s on your mind today, chances are we’ve got you covered. There’s plenty more of the good stuff that we haven’t mentioned as well, so our advice for today? Download, kick back, relax and enjoy!

It was never a question of if, but when we would get round to producing a fitting tribute to the genius of Larry and Fonce Mizell – The Mizell Brothers. On offer here are twelve wonderful tracks that highlight their ability to write, produce and create a sound that many have tried, but failed to emulate.

In the early 1970’s the brothers formed Sky High productions and it is here, from the early part of their career as producers, that we concentrate on. From their Blue Note debut in 1972 with Donald Byrd’s Black Byrd through to the Soul of Rance Allen’s Reason To Survive in 1977, artists such as Bobbi Humphrey, Roger Glenn, Johnny Hammond and Gary Bartz all sounded magnificent under the watchful eyes and finely tuned ears of The Mizell Brothers.

Of course this is only part of the tale. In different capacities they worked alongside The Moments, LTD, The Jackson 5, Mary Wells and The Blackbyrds, but this is another story for another day. For the moment, treat your ears to some of the finest Jazz-Funk from the 70’s or from any decade for that matter.
