Extra Inches: The Music of Herbie Hancock (1977-1982)
22nd September 2010
Eight tracks are on offer here which highlight the more soulful and funky side to Herbie Hancock’s repertoire and are taken from seven amazing albums. I certainly favour this wonderfully creative era from a gentleman who back then, never conformed to any stereotype – a view I’m sure most of us here at SoulandJazz.com continue to applaud. Opinion may well be divided these days on his musical direction and perhaps when you look for new music from this legend throughout our podcasts, you’ll notice we tend to take a retrospective view.
The show then is a great reminder of a man right at the top of his game and is the first in a triumvirate of programmes. Volume Two will be more Jazz focused and will feature music from the 1960 and 1970’s; these tracks will be hand selected by Lurpak no less, from the Live Tropical Fish. Volume Three will again feature music from 1977-1982 but will be more about Soul than Funk. Enjoy! [BH]
