We continue our Journey Through Jazz this week with the third consecutive episode devoted to the sound of ‘Cool’ and ‘West Coast Jazz’. We start our exploration with the cool Turkish rhythms of Dave Brubeck and follow his saxophonist Paul Desmond to something kind of cool he recorded with Gerry Mulligan – and also feature some earlier sounds of Gerry Mulligan’s Quartet with the essentially cool Chet Baker. You’ll hear the exotic side of cool as we journey to the Far East with Chico Hamilton, and then down to Brazil with Vince Guaraldi . . . then back to the blues with Brew Moore, and mixing it with mambo for a project recorded by vibraphonist Cal Tjader. We then travel to the vibe stylings of the Modern Jazz Quartet, and the foundational West Coast sound of Shorty Rogers and His Giants – including the likes of Shelley Manne and something kind of cool he did with Sonny Rollins.
