The Hurst Selection
3rd December 2011
I had mixed emotions back in July when the The Hurst Selection – London to America ended its’ two year association with WCLK in Atlanta. The show remained en route to syndication via the AAPRC/NPR with the possibilities of a continued presence on US radio retaining its appeal. I think it soon became obvious that the show itself was proving not to be an easy ’sell’. Soul and Jazz flavours served up together as a radio show? How could that ever work? Programmers are nervous of what they don’t know, least of all what they don’t understand. Corporations want to be seen to be in control, so independent programming with knowledge, passion and a desire to change is unwelcome and deemed threatening. I resigned the show in November from said organisation as I now know that until such programming is embraced, the moribund state of radio will continue at pace. A note to the industry. If you ignore or treat your audience with contempt then you don’t deserve their attention in the first place. There are no mixed emotions anymore. ‘London to America’ finished November 19 and is now once again known simply as The Hurst Selection – a show that over the next few weeks will develop into the first live programme on SoulandJazz.FM.
All that being said, here’s the second of The Hurst Selection in its’ new format. Two hours long and now available on iTunes for the first time since early 2009. It’s an interim measure as you’ll see from the paragraph above. What doesn’t change is the quality of the tracks and with 24 wonderful exponents of soul and jazz, the only losers are the people who haven’t yet heard such great music.
Stereo, not stereotypical®
Enjoy!
