The Hurst Selection is proud to present a very special edition this week. Without the usual 4 from and downloadable for the first time with the magnificent clarity of 320 kbps, or as we like to call it; HD+, twenty four tracks from 2009, with future classics in abundance.
First up, it’s M-Swift with Eric Roberson on the up-tempo ‘Feeling’, swiftly followed, pardon the pun, by Michael Olatuja from the forthcoming and magnificent set ‘Speak’. Joe McBride provides two tracks on this week’s Selection with tracks from his ‘Lookin’ for a Change’ album; the title cut is up first. We then move into controversial territory, as we broadcast the full-on version of the new N’Dambi single from the forthcoming ‘Pink Elephant’ set. Brian Hurst on ‘Can’t Hardly Wait’:
“Not normally one for expletives in songs, and positively fed up with most of the nonsense uttered in the usual Hip-Hop tracks, there were two versions of this track on offer. The radio friendly version uses the word fussin’, where as the full-on version uses f***ing. In the context of the song, the word fussin’ doesn’t work, but for everyday radio that’s fine and expected. I think the people that listen to S&J generally trust the music I use, but if they are of a somewhat delicate nature, are suitably warned before the track is played. From my own perspective, I think it’s a great song and one that I hope signifies, possibly, her best album to date”.
Moving right along, recent track releases then follow from Maxwell, Terence Blanchard with Bilal, Will Downing and the wonderful Marion Meadows/Brian Chartrand ‘Friends’, which incidentally, was written by Bobby McFerrin. There’s also Eric Roberson with a song from his ‘Music Fan First’, George Benson from ‘Songs and Stories’, the SK Radicals from their forthcoming set and a further great groove from M-Swift with Marcina Arnold. Finally on the soul side, Teena Marie and George Duke feature with the title cut from ‘Congo Square’
The Jazzier Side of Life gets underway with a cover of the Cameo classic ‘Word Up’, the second track on the Selection from Joe McBride. Robert Glasper debuts on S&J with ‘Buttefly’, a track from his thought provoking ‘Double Booking’ CD on Blue Note. It’s a second play for Ronnie Laws, followed by a great cover of the Isley’s ‘Work To Do’ by Carl Allen and Rodney Whitaker. Then it’s Nathan Haines with ‘Talkin’ Around’ from ‘Right Now’, his excellent set that was released earlier this year. We’ve then some of that Italian magic from Schema Records featuring Rosalia de Souza, S-Tone Inc. and Lorenzo Tucci from their recent CD’s – all marvelous by the way. Finally there’s the exciting sound of Soul Sugar, a track from the hot forthcoming set from The Milano Jazz Dance Combo and finally, out of Sweden, the quite excellent Quietnights Orchestra with ‘Looking East’, a track from their fabulous ‘Chapter One’ CD.
